Beyond January’s New Year’s Resolution:

A Strength Coach’s Guide to Sustaining Your Strength & Fitness Resolutions Over 50.

The Beginning of a New Year:

The beginning of a new year often witnesses a surge of enthusiasm for adopting healthier habits, with strength training topping the list of resolutions.

As a Strength Coach specialising in the over 50’s, I’ve noticed a busy gym since January began. However, the true challenge lies not in the initial burst of motivation but in sustaining it throughout the year. Achieving lasting results requires more than just enthusiasm; it demands a strategic approach, a plan, and unwavering perseverance.

The SMART Approach:

Drawing from years of experience, I emphasize the importance of a plan that is Sustainable, Measurable, Achievable, involves taking Responsibility, and has a Timeframe – yes that’s my own take on SMART goals.

The framework provides a roadmap for setting realistic and attainable objectives, ensuring that your strength and fitness journey is both effective and sustainable.

Consistency and

 Persistency:

Consistency and persistency are the cornerstones of any successful strength, fitness and health journey. Like any well-optimised strategy, a consistent and persistent approach to your strength training builds a powerful mindset and motivation, laying the foundation for achieving remarkable results.

Establishing a routine and sticking to it, regardless of external factors, is key to long-term

 success.

The Power of Accountability:

While the responsibility for your strength, fitness and health journey lies with you, accountability can be a game-changer.

This could take the form of training with friends or enlisting the support of a coach. A coach not only understands your goals but also prioritises injury prevention (well, at least they should!) fosters a supportive community, and ensures consistency in your training regimen.

The accountability factor serves as a motivational tool, pushing you to stay committed even when the initial excitement wears off.

Building a Supportive Community:

A crucial aspect of sustaining your strength, fitness and health resolutions is building a supportive community. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar goals (even that means your coach!)

Training with friends or participating in group training sessions not only makes your training sessions enjoyable but also creates a sense of camaraderie and encouragement.

A supportive community reinforces your commitment and provides the necessary encouragement to push through challenges.

Injury Prevention as a Priority:

As a Strength Coach for over 50’s, I prioritise injury prevention. A well-structured training program should not only enhance strength but also minimise the risk of injuries.

This involves understanding your body’s limitations, incorporating appropriate activations, and warm-up routines, and ensuring proper form and technique during exercises.

Injury prevention is fundamental to maintaining long-term strength, fitness, and health goals.

Conclusion:

In the quest to sustain your strength, fitness, and health resolutions beyond January, adopting a strategic approach, setting realistic goals with the SMART framework, prioritising consistency and persistency, leveraging the power of accountability, building a supportive community, and making injury prevention a priority is paramount.

As you take charge of your strength, fitness, and health journey, remember that it’s not just about January enthusiasm; it’s about the year-round commitment to improved strength, health, vitality, and overall well-being.

With the right plan and mindset, you can make 2024 a year of lasting strength, fitness, and health success. Keep pushing, stay consistent, and embrace the journey!
